Meet selected members of our team in Spain – representatives of our commitment, teamwork and professionalism.

Mark Howard, Director

Mark has an adventurous spirit and has worked in countries as diverse as South Korea, Romania, Colombia and Singapore. His curiosity and passion for learning saw him start out as a teacher of history in the UK. He then switched to English and began working for the British Council, with whom he has been teaching and learning for 25 years. He is currently Director of the British Council in Spain.

Carolina Jiménez, Head of Higher Education and Society

The philosopher Herbert Spencer held that ‘the great aim of education is not knowledge, but action’: a quote that perfectly captures the essence of Carolina. She held various posts at the British Council before becoming Head of Higher Education and Society. In this role she works to improve educational standards and 'builds futures' by advising students, families and teachers on study opportunities in the UK.

Mark Levy

Mark Levy, Head of English Programmes

Football and music are, along with education and family, Mark's great passions. His career with the British Council started back in 1994. Prior to his current role, he worked as a teacher and trainer, working with teachers across the country. In 2010, he joined the Bilingual Programme, managing relations with the Spanish Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, as well as Spain’s regional governments, in all matters relating to the implementation and improvement of bilingualism in Spain.

Sonja Uhlmann, Safeguarding Manager and EDI Country Lead

Sonja’s role centres on the protection and promotion of the rights of children. Her work in child protection provides young people with a space where they feel safe and secure. Her work also involves promoting our values of equality, diversity and inclusion in our activities and events across Spain.
