Role overview
We are looking for applications from prospective speaking examiners willing to join our expanding IELTS examination operations in Spain.
We welcome applications exclusively from candidates living in the following cities or in nearby suburbs (30-45 min travel time from home): Barcelona, Bilbao, Islas Canarias, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Santiado de Compostela and Valencia.
You will need:
- An undergraduate or Master’s degree or a qualification which can be demonstrated to be equivalent to an undergraduate or Master’s degree.
- A recognised qualification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or recognised equivalent as part of a recognised university award course.
- At least 3 years’ full time (or the equivalent part time) relevant TESOL teaching experience (minimum one year post-certificate level qualification). The majority of this teaching experience must relate to adult students (16 years and over).
- The required professional attributes and interpersonal skills
Speaking examiners typically conduct candidate interviews at a test venue on a Thursday, Friday or a Saturday, testing up to 20 candidates per exam session. Occasionally they might be required to test on other weekdays as well. Current British Council IELTS examiners work once every several weeks, mostly on Saturdays, and several times a year on a Thursday or Friday.
The assessment of professional attributes and interpersonal skills of examiner applicants occurs at three stages in the recruitment process: application form, interview and training.

Application, Shortlisting, Interview and Training
Please download all application documents listed at the bottom of this page.
In order to apply, email us the completed application form with scans of the required certificates and diplomas. Please do not send us any original documents at this stage; they will have to be sent by courrier at a later stage if you are invited to attend the interview.
Please send the documents with subject line “Application for IELTS examiner”. Please do not send emails that total more than 10 MB (email plus attachments). If you need to send big data, split it into several emails, otherwise our system will reject the message.
Before filling in the application form please read the “Guide for Applicants to IELTS Examiner Recruitment” and the “Examiner Minimum Professional Requirements”, both available for download at the bottom of this page. Please ask three referees to email us the filled-in reference request letter, also part of this pack.
- Application deadline: We must receive the applications by email and the references from your referees no later than Sunday, 25 June 2023. Only complete documentation will be considered.
- Shortlisted applicants will be contacted prior to 10 July. Interviews will be held from 17 to 24 July (details to be confirmed with the applicants). The results of the interviews will be communicated by 31 July.
- Induction to IELTS examining will be organised prior to the training, half a day in our offices – to be confirmed with the successful applicants after the application screening.
- Speaking examiners’ training will be held in two consecutive days between 11 and 30 September in our main centres (Barcelona, Bilbao and Madrid). The certification test will take place from the afternoon of the last training day.
- Successful trainees are required to be available for their first session within one month from the certification date.
Further information for the post: All of our contracts are local. Costs of accommodation and travel/flights to and from post and/or training are not paid.
