This year the British Council, global partner of the Hay Festival, offers a programme focused on some of the issues crystallised by cities: diversity, integration, information and creativity.
The acclaimed novelist Nikesh Shukla is one of the sharpest analysts of British society as can be seen from the humorous portraiture of adolescence in the London’s suburbs in Coconut Unlimited, or the description of what happens when our lives become nothing more than an aggregation of shared content in Meatspace. Shukla also edited The good immigrant, a book that brings together essays by 21 British authors talking about immigration.
Ben Okri, for his part, will discuss with Jesús Calero the concepts of post-truth and the instrumentalization of language today.
Finally and for the first time in Spain Segovia will host a Spoken Word performance given by Jay Bernard, one of the most outstanding voices among emerging British contemporary artists. Having presented their works in such emblematic venues as Buckingham Palace, the British Library or the Royal Shakespeare Company on this occasion Bernard will take the stage at Segovia’s former jail to present their vision on gender, sexuality and diversity.
We are also looking forward to welcoming to Segovia one of the great names of contemporary British literature, Jeanette Winterson, and the philosopher A.C. Grayling among many others.
