Young Learner FAQs

Do you have questions about our young learner courses? Find answers here!

If you’re looking for course options, schedules, fees, or learning methods, our FAQs cover everything you need to know to start your journey with the British Council.

➤ How do I register my child or teenager for an English course?

Please book a consultation with one of our experts.

If your child is aged seven or under you can attend the consultation online or in person, and we'll tell you about our Early Years or Primary courses.

If your child is aged eight or over we will send a level test and you can attend the consultation with the child so that we can assess their level of spoken English. After the consultation we can advise you about your child's level and give you information about our Primary or Secondary courses.

After the consultation is complete, we will contact you to help you finalise your child’s registration.

➤ How can I pay for my child’s course?

We have various payment options including direct debit, credit card, debit card, cheque or bank transfer. We do not accept cash payments.

We also offer instalment plans so that you can spread the payments throughout the academic year.

➤ My child has a certificate with their English level, do I need to do your level test?

If you have an accredited English certificate, for example Cambridge or Aptis ESOL, the child doesn't need to take the level test. When you speak to one of our experts about our courses they will advise you further.

➤ I already completed the level test and I am still waiting for the results. How long does it take?

We usually contact you within 48 hours after you have completed your level test. Please contact us on 911 218 000 if you do not receive a call or email within this time frame.

➤ I booked a consultation, but I need to change/cancel, how can I do that?

You can change the time and date of your consultation, as well as cancel your consultation, via the link in the confirmation email you will receive once your consultation is booked.

➤ Are your teachers native speakers?

All British Council teachers are proficient speakers of English and expert in teaching English. Our teachers come from a wide range of backgrounds and nationalities. Ability, experience, and qualifications are important to us. All our teachers share a common goal to offer the highest standards of English language teaching to our learners.

At a minimum we recruit teachers who have:

  • an undergraduate level or equivalent degree
  • a certificate in teaching English as a foreign language such as Cambridge University CELTA or Trinity College London CertTESOL

Additionally our teachers take part in continuous professional development programmes, and are encouraged to obtain further qualifications such as Cambridge University DELTA or Trinity College London DipTESOL, and specialised qualifications for young learners, such as TYLEC

➤ How many students are there in each class for kids and teens?

For most of our Primary and Secondary courses the maximum class size is 14 students.

Our online Primary and Secondary classes have a maximum of 12 students.

In our Early Years classes we usually have a child to adult ratio of maximum six children to each adult. (add info about TAs?)

Our courses are aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) language levels.

We have exam preparation Secondary courses for B1.2 (online only), B2.2, C1.2 and C2.2 levels. These use course books and include English Extra exam preparation as well as a mock exam.

Primary Plus 6 students have the option to do B1 Preliminary exam (PET) preparation as part of our English Extra classes, which are optional online classes we offer in addition to the course classes.
