How do I register for a course?

All new students taking a course at the British Council must take a free level test before registration.

Existing students can register directly with their local centre.

Check your English level

The level test assesses your spoken and written English and takes an hour at most. You must take a test if you’ve not studied with us before or you haven’t done any study with us in the last six months.

Children under six years do not need to take the level test.

To book a level test, please contact your local centre, or book online during our registration periods:

Level tests take place at your local centre, and you will receive the result shortly after completing the test.

Our teachers and customer services team will then help you find the right course for you, at the right time and location. If there is a suitable course available, you can then register and pay the course fee. Contact your local centre to register.

If you need any special help to access our centre or take a level test or course, please let us know before your level test appointment.

Payment, terms and conditions

For course payment, terms and conditions please see your local centre page.

Should there be an insufficient number of students registered for a course, we reserve the right to close this course. In such an event, the course fee that has already been paid will be refunded in full.
