Find all the essential information you need about your Aptis ESOL results.

The results from your Aptis ESOL exam are presented in three ways:

  • Numerical score: a score from 0 to 50 for each component
  • Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level for each skill
  • An overall Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level.

Your Aptis ESOL test results will be issued 48 to 72 hours after the exam date (excluding weekends and public holidays) and will be sent to you via e-mail.

Aptis ESOL scores reflect your ability to understand and communicate in English.

Aptis ESOL General assesses language proficiency from A1 to B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). If you demonstrate a level superior to a B2 you will be awarded a C1.

Aptis ESOL Advanced assesses language proficiency from B1 to C2 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

If you are not satisfied with your results, you may request a re-mark of your test. This service, known as Enquiry on Results, is available up to eight weeks after the test date.

The current fee for this service is 53€

To submit an Enquiry on Results, complete the online form at the end of the next section and provide proof of payment.

Please be aware that under the Aptis ESOL Terms and Conditions, the British Council does not permit candidates, test centres, or institutions to view or review the answers from any Aptis ESOL test, either during or after the marking process, or as part of an Enquiry on Results.

This aligns with the standard practices of other awarding bodies, and the British Council will not provide exam answers in response to a subject access request.

You may request a re-mark of the entire test, not just individual components.

  • The grammar and vocabulary, reading, and listening components are checked by the system to ensure accuracy in marking.
  • The speaking and writing components are re-marked by qualified examiners.

If your overall CEFR level increases after the re-marking, you will be refunded the full Enquiry on Results fee, and a new Aptis ESOL certificate will be issued.

If your CEFR level remains the same or changes in a singular component without affecting the overall level, the fee will be retained, and you will be notified.

The outcome of the Enquiry on Results is considered final. The results from the re marking process will be available within two to seven days.

If you haven’t received your certificate by this deadline:

  • If you registered your personal email address during registration, please check your spam folder. Your certificate may be there.
  • If you registered through an Aptis ESOL Agent or another institution, please check with them to confirm that they provided the British Council with your personal address.
  • Your results may be under review or investigation. If this is the case, you will have received a notification from the British Council prior to the 3-working day deadline for certificate issue. Please check your inbox or spam folders.

No, if you score below CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) level A1 in your Aptis ESOL General or for Teachers exam or B1 in your Aptis ESOL Advanced exam, you will be issued a report confirming that you have not demonstrated sufficient level for a certificate to be awarded.

If you took Aptis ESOL before the 24 April 2025, the certificate issued to you confirms the CEFR level achieved in the country you took the test. However, it does not contain the level of the qualification in England, where Ofqual is the regulator. The British Council will issue a corrected version of the certificate to those learners who request this. If you wish to receive a replacement certificate free of charge, please contact the British Council.
