Aptis and Aptis ESOL is an innovative multilevel English language qualification designed and developed by British Council language testing experts and underpinned by the latest research in assessment methodology.

Aptis and Aptis ESOL assesses your language proficiency in all four English skills; speaking, listening, reading and writing, at all levels from A1 to C2 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).  

Aptis ESOL is available in the following variants: 

Aptis ESOL General A General English proficiency test, assessing levels from A1 to B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Candidates demonstrating a level above B2 are awarded a C on the CEFR.
Aptis ESOL Advanced Tests language proficiency from B1 to C2. Tasks are more complex and designed to distinguish between C1 and C2 level candidates.
Aptis ESOL for Teachers Adapted for the educational context. The test content relates to teachers and the scenarios they come across every day.  It has the same format as Aptis ESOL General and tests levels from A1 to B2.
Aptis for Teens A four-skills, computer-based English test designed for school-age learners and Education Institutions that assesses levels from A1 to B2 on the CEFR. If a student demonstrates a level above B2, they will be awarded a C.

Which Aptis ESOL variant to choose?

Before choosing which Aptis or Aptis ESOL to take, please check with the recognising institution to confirm which variant and overall score you need

If you want to certify your level up to and including B2, you should take Aptis ESOL General. 

If you want to certify your level at C1 or C2 and are sure that you have the level of English to do so, you may wish to take Aptis ESOL Advanced. 

If you are a working or trainee teacher, you may want to certify your level taking Aptis ESOL for Teachers, especially if recognised in the region where you wish to work. 

If you are a teenager between 13 and 17 years old, Aptis for Teens is adapted to reflect the activities and scenarios that occur in your everyday life.

Aptis ESOL Regulation and recognition

Aptis ESOL is regulated by the United Kingdom Government’s Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual), which regulates qualifications, examinations and assessments in England. 

In Spain, Aptis ESOL is recognised by multiple institutions and education departments as an official certification of English language proficiency.
